Title
Letter from Wendell P. Phillips to Samuel Downer regarding the speeches at the reunion
Description
In this two-page letter Wendell P. Phillips states that he is sending the proof sheets for the Free Soil Party reunion publication. He then says that all Free Soilers are under obligation to Samuel Downer for arranging the reunion. He closes by saying that he would have spoken more of his father, but kept his remarks brief because he thought that John B. Alley was going to speak more about him.

Dear Mr Downer,
I return to you …[illegible]… the proof sheets corrected, and should have sent them before but for illness.
Your celebration was a success, and we are all under obligations to you for bringing the men of 1848 together once more. I would have been glad to have said more of my father, but I had understood that Mr Alley was to speak in regard to him, and therefore was as brief as possible.
Yours truly
