Title

Letter from Sebeus C. Maine with suggestions for the reunion publication

Description

In this three-page letter Sebeus C. Maine acknowledges Samuel Downer's intention to print a memorial pamphlet of the reunion of the Free Soil Party. He then gives several suggestions regarding the contents of the pamphlet. He says that Downer should consider collecting contributions from Free Soilers regarding their recollections of the events that took place during the struggle for abolition. Downer could then choose which contributions were best to include in the publication.

Boston Augst [sic] 20th / 77

Samuel Downer, Esq

My Dear Sir,

I see in the Globe of this morning that it is your inten-tion to print a pamphlet report of the proceedings of 1848, at the Landing.

…[illegible]… the pamphlet would be treasured safe by thousands, I have no doubt.

If you will par-don a suggestion: would it not add to the interest of the pamphlet, if from the great number present, you should receive short con-tributions, narra-ting …[illegible]… and incidents within their own obser-vations, in the ab-olition struggle, and the …[illegible]… and successful march of the free soil party.

From the con-tributions so made to you, you could select such, or such portions of each as might give interest to the book, leave personal[?] interes-ting [sic] historical facts - to the …[illegible]… of those who come after us.

                                I am yours

                                very truly
