Letter from Samuel E. Sewall to Samuel Downer declining to contribute to the reunion publication

In this two-page letter Samuel E. Sewall writes that he would have replied to Samuel Downer's letter sooner but he was out of town. He continues on to say that he did not think of speaking at the reunion of the Free Soil Party and therefore did not prepare a speech. Although he has many ideas of what might have been appropriate for the event, he will not attempt to write anything. He closes the letter by stating that he is happy the proceedings will be published in pamphlet form.

Dear Mr Downer

Absence from town has delayed my answering your favor of the 14th inst [sic] to this date.

I had no idea of being called on to speak at your entertainment and had made no prepa-ration for that purpose.  Though I have many ideas in my head that would have been ap-propriate for the occa-sion, I shall not attempt to put in writing what I might, could, or would have said.

You are adding to the pleasure of our very enjoy-able meeting by the plan of putting its proceedings in a pamphlet form
