Dear Sir
Your kind invitation to attend a Reunion of the Free Soilers of 1848 at Melville Gardens on Thursday the 9th inst [sic] is rec'd [sic]. As I can claim a political existanse [sic] of that character which extends back to 1845. I shall take great pleasure in accepting your hospitality. I recall the times when I labored with a small + faithful band at South Boston of which our honored friend Dr. S. G. Howe was a member and when it required principle + firmness to maintain the doctrine of equal rights to all, without
distinction of color. I remember when the entire vote of Ward 12. - for Free Soil only numbered twelve.
Thanking you for your kind invitation I remain
Very Truly Yours
H. O. Briggs
