Boston, July 23, ’77.
Dear Mr. Downer: -
Many thanks for your kind invitation. Will endeavor to accept the favor and be with the “Saints” of the Political church on the day named – the 9th prox [sic].
I am glad you have moved in this matter. In 1872 I conferred with Mr. Bird about having such a gathering in Bos-ton the following year – the 25th anniversary of the or-ganization of the Free Soil party. He, and Claflin, and Wilson, and Spooner, and others, were enthusiastic about it, but the “row” of that fall between Grant and Sumner put an end to all friendly intercourse, and the matter was given up.
You will now have better luck, doubtless, though
Some of the 1848 men are now away over into the Democratic party!
I suppose you have all the names of the Saints, but I will venture to give you –
Curtis C. Nichols, Five-Cents Savings Bank,
George W. Carnes, Clothier, West St, Boston
Joseph K. Hayes, Int. Rev. Office, Boston,
Dr. Luther Parks, Boston –
As among the number […], possibly, as others. Also Henry C. Shepard, Stationer, Court St.
Truly yr[sic] friend. Chas. W. Slack.
