Text
Salem August 4th 1877
Dear Sir.
Your kind invitation to be present at Melville Gardens on the 9th Inst[sic] is received.
I shall most gladly avail myself of the privelege[sic] of meeting the veterans of 1848, who unfurled the banner of liberty for all men, and fought the battle out "on that line", although then so much despised and scoffed at as fools and fanatics.
May God give us strength and courage to contend for equality and equal justice for all in the present, and may we transmit these sacred principles to our children, so that we may become a nation free in deed as well as name.
Very Respt[sic] your's
Wm Chase
