Title

Excerpt from the Town Clerk's Office Records Regarding the Case of David H. Champlin

Description

This document is an excerpt from the records of the Town Clerk. It discusses a decision made at the 1864 Annual Town Meeting regarding David H. Champlin. A volunteer in the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts during the Civil War, Champlin requested that his family receive the same town aid as family members of soldiers who were drafted. The record indicates that in the previous year a committee was formed to make a recommendation on the subject. Two out of three of the members believed that Champlin's family should not receive aid. However, Samuel L. Fearing's minority report, which is transcribed in full, states that he felt Champlin's family should receive aid since he was doing the same work as men who were drafted. The town residents voted to support Fearing's report so that Champlin's family would receive aid.
