Title

Portrait Photograph of Lucretia Leonard

Description

This item is a photograph of Lucretia Leonard taken around 1902. Leonard was one of the few black citizens forced to sit in the slave galleries built into the New North Church in the first half of the 19th century. This state of affairs endured until her white employers, the Thaxter sisters, insisted she be allowed to sit in their pew and that segregation be eliminated.
