Saml Downer Esq.

Boston Mass.

Dear Sir,

Your kind invitation "to attend a reunion of the Free Soilers of 1848 at Melville Gardens on Thurs-day the ninth day of August" is received. On looking over the cataglogue of my old associates, I find that Chase, Sumner, Leav-itt, Wilson and a host of others have gone to their reward in heaven, and we shall meet them no more here.

The days of my own pilgrimage being now near three score and ten years, I feel strongly inclined to improve the opportunities that may remain to meet the old familiar faces who stood firm in bygone days that tried men's souls.

I remain Yours Faithfully & Truly

                J. W. Alden
