Dear Mr Downer,

Abraham Payne of Providence - a lawyer now with active practice - and a man of culture spoke for us at Faneiul Hall in 1848.

Dr W. F Channing now of Newport R.I - son of Rev Dr W E- was I think then active.

Hon James A Briggs, State Assessor  Brooklyn NY was then a Free Soil editor in Ohio - and came to Mass to speak[.]  If invited I feel quite sure he would come.  He was at Buffalo in 1848 and saw much of Sumner.  Dana Jr

Matthew Bolles  State St Broker was of our side then was not.  Oliver Warner also.

I think Marshall S Rice Newton Upper Falls is living.

If so, he should be asked.  He was very active in those days.

Mr Hyde or Mr Waters[?] of Advertiser can tell you about him.  He must be along in years.

We ought to be sure of having Richard H Dana Jr

Yours truly

Edw. L Pierce

I also suggest T Wentworth Higginson of Newport.   Also it has occured to me to say that it would be a good thing to get as far as possible accurate reminiscences - and let Mr. Slack or some one write them down.

We had better not in-dulge much in an elegiac strain
