Dear Sir
A great many of the rank + file of the Free Soil Army who spent time + money al-most [sic] without stint + were at one time ready to risk their lives feel that the officers or leaders carry off all honor, but this is usually the case and I sometimes think what an amount of misery, of wounds + death is required to build up a reputation for a General and what an amount of disinterested politicism is required to build up that of a politician <insertion: or> of an ambitious man, who to say the least has an eye to his own reputa-tion [sic] + advancement as well as to the support of a principle. There were not many of this sort in the Free Soil party to be sure, because there was not much to gain but much to loose[sic], but some of us lost caste + paid considerable for the good cause. Would it not be well to make a list of the Massa-chusetts [sic] survivors + form a club for the future preservation of our Feedom. There is a league now formed against it as serious as that of the slave power.
Truly Yours
Edw. Winslow
