DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
WASHINGTON.
August 7. 1877
My dear Mr. Bird,
I am very sorry to say that I shall not be able to attend the meeting of the original Free Soilers to which yourself and Mr. Downer so kindly invited me The business of my Department will not permit my absence, and you will do me a great favor by explaining my sincere regrets to Mr. Downer, together with my heartfelt thanks for having been honored with an invitation. I should have been very glad to attend, but it is impossible.
Sincerely yours
C. Schurz
