Boston, Aug. 6, 1877.

Saml Downer, Esq.

Dear Sir,

Many thanks for your kind invitation to Downer's Landing on Thursday next.  I hope to be able to be present; although I have no claim to be numbered among the practical working heroes of the Free Soil move-ment.  From the first my heart + vote were with it + I talked it earnestly, but that was all; I never was an active politician.  I presume I owe the invitation to the too ready intervention of my friend Mrs Anagnos.

                                Yours very truly

                                                J. S. Dwight.
