Letter from Edward H. Payson to Samuel Downer declining his invitation to the reunion

In this two-page letter Edward H. Payson acknowledges receipt of Samuel Downer's invitation to the reunion of the Free Soil Party and enthusiastically thanks him for it. He states that he is very proud to have been a member of the Party and remembers with satisfaction the fight for liberty and their ultimate success. He closes the letter by saying that he is just about to go on vacation and therefore regretfully cannot attend the reunion.

My dear Sir

I have received your Circular inviting me to a Reunion of the Free Soilers of 1848 at Melville Gardens on the Ninth inst.[sic]

Thank you most heartily for <insertion: this> kind remembrance of me as a member of a party of which I have'nt[sic] lived long enough yet, to be ashamed; + remember with great satisfaction the hard battle we fought + won of that day, tho' we were apparently defeated.

I am just starting on my vacation trip to be absent, probably two or three weeks, + therefore I most regretfully + respectfully decline your polite invitation
