Samuel Downer Esq.
Dear Sir.
Your invitation to visit Melville Gardens on the 9th of August to attend a Reunion of the Free Soilers of 1848 is just received, and I take great pleasure in accepting it. The noble and unselfish Band of Free Soilers who in 48 arrested the onward march of the Slave Power, and who at that time were stigmatized as Fanatics and one Idea men, are now universaly[sic] recognised as the Salt that saved our Country, and have made it what it is, free in fact as well as name.
Yours with great respect.
Edward S. Buffum.
