Description

This item is a black-and-white drawing of the Battle of Cienfuegos, Cuba, which occurred during the Spanish-American War on May 11, 1898. The purpose of the mission was for United States ships to cut the underwater telegraph cables being used for communication throughout Cuba as well as with the Spanish command. The image shows boats from the USS Nashville (Gunboat # 7) and the USS Marblehead (Cruiser # 11) cutting the cables while under intense Spanish gunfire. The actual ships can be seen in the background returning fire (the Nashville on the right and the Marblehead on the left).
